Cheap Movers: Ways to Having a Stress Free Relocation.
September 25, 2009
Relocating cross country can be worrisome experience. It has happened to our family twice in the last five years. My first idea, once again, was hiring a reliable moving company as the one we had used in the past was out of business and had caused us an unending amount of problems for us.
As a beginning, I contacted several cross country movers in the phone book. I succeeded in getting several to come to the house and prepare some estimates. I was not so much interested in cheap movers as I was in the quality of their packing/loading and the references that they could provide.
The previous company that we had caused damage to our things and, some of it was missing when it arrived at the destination. The largest mistake we made with that company was not going to an external source to insure our belongings. After months of trying to get someone from both the moving company and the insurance company to get a hold of us, I gave up. We were not able to locate our belongings, nor were we able to be compensated, as they had subsequently closed.
Two of the moving companies were turned down by us at once as they were unwilling to unpack the boxes at our new place without charging us an extra cost and also were not able or willing to provide references. Therefore, when Mr. Bill Smith arrived, wearing a uniform and looking crisp and clean, I felt relieved. He made me immediately at ease about the move. He gave me all the literature I needed to explain the process. The quote he would provide me was final. There would not be any hidden fees and they also had a reputable insurance company that they went through to insure our belongings. All of this, including unpacking at the destination was all included in the cost. We accepted his quote and booked dates for the packing and loading.
On moving day, Bill arrived, along with the movers, to oversee and supervise the process. They brought blankets to put down on the floor so that dirt would not be tracked into the house. They wrapped all our breakable goods in bubble wrap and packing paper. Our furniture was prepped by taking off legs, and wrapping it in plastic to protect it from getting dirty during the move. I was amazed with the speed and the ease at which the packing was done.
The next day, Bill arrived again with his crew for the loading process. The truck was very clean and empty. It would hold only our goods, no one else’s. The movers used caution while moving items out of the house, onto the truck, so that there would not be any damage done to the walls or door frames. They were finished quickly and with ease. The workers were polite, and also helped the kids feel like they were part of the move as well. They let them pack their soft toys and permitted the kids to mark their own boxes with kids stickers for identification. By doing this, it took away some of the stress of the move for the kids.
