Women Love Their Lipstick Cosmetics

October 5, 2010

Women and cosmetics have a long history going back thousands of years. During the evolution of cosmetics there were eras when the cosmetics were produced with toxic chemicals which threatened the lives of women who wore them. History has recorded the use of cosmetics back to the Babylonians about 6000 years ago.

Ancient Babylonians smashed gems to get the color they wanted to spread on their lips. Egyptians produced a purplish red lipstick using iodine and bromine. Carmine beetles crushed with a pestle produced a strong red color ,this was mixed with ant’s eggs to make a lip color. Ant’s eggs were blended with pulverized carmine beetles to get a strong red colored lipstick. This concoction was most likely the red that adorned the lips of Cleopatra.

Red lips with a white powdered face became the style of Queen Elizabeth’s reign.

Lipstick cosmetics were a no no in the 1700’s, women had to be brave to wear them because it might get them branded and executed as a witch. English Parliament actually passed this law claiming that women used lipstick and other cosmetics to bewitch men into marrying them.

Queen Victoria spoke against wearing makeup and during her reign, lipstick and other makeup was considered bad taste. Wearing makeup and dressing in an improper way could ruin a Victorian woman.

Lipstick and other cosmetics were brought into the spotlight when movies became popular. Movie stars like Betty Grable and Gloria Swanson prompted women to wear lipstick on a regular basis. Many of the cosmetic companies that got started then are still doing business now.

Styles are constantly changing. Although ingredients and colors have improved, the attraction of lipstick cosmetics remains the same as 6000 years ago.

Women find that cosmetics are the perfect adornment for their own natural beauty. Self confidence is a benefit of looking our best. That can often be accomplished by just applying lipstick cosmetics.

Whether you choose those deep red vampish lips or you just want a quick application of a pastel lip gloss, you will feel more confident.

Women grew up watching their mothers and grandmothers applying their cosmetics and it joins them in a common affection for the product. When the granddaughter grows up she will pass on her cosmetic hints to her own granddaughter.

Women realized the benefits of cosmetics to enhance their beauty centuries ago.
